The talk about the fertile period, ovulation and when to have sex might have you feeling more lost than ever. Isn’t there a day when you are the most fertile? Let’s do some detective work and find out the best time for sexual intercourse to get pregnant.
Your ovulation day gives a hint of your most fertile days
The fertile period for women is the one week before and after ovulation. If your menstrual cycle is 28 days, you will usually ovulate 14 days before your next menstruation starts.
This is really a rough estimate, but in general, ovulation happens around 14 days before your next menstruation. If you have a menstrual cycle once every 35 days, for example, it means that you’ll ovulate on the 21st day of your menstrual cycle (the 1st day is the day you started menstruating the previous time).
When are you most fertile?
Unfortunately…there is no one “best”, more fertile day that you should have intercourse on. The good news is, there is a period of a few days that you can aim for, instead!
Let’s look at the facts. The lifespan of an egg is 24 hours and on the other hand, the sperm has a lifespan of about 2 to 3 days. Throw these two factors together, when you’re most fertile is 2 to 3 days before and 1 day after ovulation.
During that fertile period, instead of hoping to hit the jackpot through a one-time sexual intercourse, it’s recommended that you keep yourself busy in bed numerous times. Doing so will increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
How to find out when you’re most fertile
This method tells your most fertile 5 days by using a calendar. Although ovulation occurs on one day only, the ovulation phase takes place over the course of 5 days.
Checking cervical mucus
Use your fingers or tissue to check the cervical mucus at the opening of your vagina. When cervical mucus increases in amount and becomes stringier, it means your ovulation date is approaching.
Charting basal body temperature
In general, most women see a dip in their basal body temperature from a low range to a lower level before entering a relatively high range. Ovulation usually occurs 1 to 2 days before and after the dip day, or on the dip day.
Ovulation prediction kits
The urine-based test strip can tell when your luteinizing hormone levels are increasing, and so can give you a positive response about 24 hours prior to ovulation.
Knowing yourself well is half the battle won
There is, scientifically, a few days in which you are the most fertile. However, there is a need to have a rough idea when ovulation occurs. Your body is unique and sometimes the general standards might not apply to you, so it’s important that you get acquainted with your own body.
Finding out when your most fertile days are is something only you can do. Even you’ve had no interest in keeping records of your menstrual period, it’s time to get serious about it – there are applications you can easily download and use.
These records can not only tell your practitioner more about you, but you’ll find out more about your own body. Knowing yourself is half the battle won – and it’s a fight to get yourself pregnant and give yourself the child or children you’ve been wanting to have.
